Intuitive and Mindful Eating

Eating right does not need to have a lot of rules that makes it a challenge. It can be as easy as breathing if we can just listen to our bodies and ourselves more.

Most of us have heard words like intuitive eating and mindful eating but do not know what it really means. Intuitive eating, just like the name suggests is eating based on your instincts. The idea is to listen to your body and understand that your body is the best and the only person that can make the right choices.

“Hence, it is important to truly trust our bodies with the emotions we feel before and after every meal.”

These days listening to your body can be hard because of all the diet culture rules we listen/read online that can cloud our judgement. Hence, it is important to truly trust our bodies with the emotions we feel before and after every meal. This will help you to eat only when you are hungry and tackle overeating.

Understanding types of hunger

Physical Hunger

This biological urge tells you to replenish nutrients. It builds gradually and has different signals, such as a growling stomach, fatigue, or irritability. It’s satisfied when you eat any food.

Emotional hunger

This is driven by emotional need. Sadness, loneliness, and boredom are some of the feelings that can create cravings for food, often comfort foods. Eating then causes guilt and self-hatred.

A lot of people struggle with emotional eating and when they try to restrict themselves it leads to binge eating or eating disorders.

Our moods and emotions change when our hormone levels vary. Now, how do we keep our hormonal levels balanced. The answer is FOOD. Sometimes eating that brownie our bodies crave for is the right way to go, sometimes eating a well balanced meal would satisfy all your cravings and the other times the right supplements help normalize our hormonal levels.

It is very important to understand that we all have different bodies that work in different ways. We need to stop listening to the "one size fits all" approach, especially with people struggling with PCOS, IBS, Thyroid problems etc. You will find what works best for you by listening to your bodies, a little experimentation along with trial and error. The best thing we can do for ourselves is being patient and taking it one day at a time.
